Long-term survival following resection of brain metastases from pancreatic cancer.

چکیده
Brain metastases originating from pancreatic cancer are associated with a dismal prognosis and, generally, therapeutic options remain palliative. We present the cases of two patients that developed brain metastases after resection of a pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Brain metastases were resected successfully and neither patients developed any further tumor recurrence. These cases demonstrate that resection of brain metastatic lesions originating from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is a reasonable therapeutic option with a chance for complete cure in some cases.

Brain Metastasis in Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer is a fatal disease with a 5-year survival rate below 5%. Most patients are diagnosed at an advanced tumor stage and existence of distant metastases. However, involvement of the central nervous system is rare in pancreatic cancer. We retrospectively analyzed all cases of brain metastases in pancreatic cancer reported to date focusing on patient characteristics, clinical appeara...
متن کاملA long-term survival case treated with conversion surgery following chemotherapy after diagnostic metastasectomy for pancreatic cancer with synchronous liver metastasis
BACKGROUND Pancreatic cancer with distant metastases is classified as "unresectable," for which the standard treatment is systemic chemotherapy. The effectiveness of radical resection for pancreatic cancer with distant metastases is unknown. Here, we report a case of long term survival treated with conversion surgery following chemotherapy after diagnostic metastasectomy for pancreatic cancer w...
متن کاملBrain Metastases in Gastrointestinal Cancers: Is there a Role for Surgery?
About 10% of all cancer patients will develop brain metastases during advanced disease progression. Interestingly, the vast majority of brain metastases occur in only three types of cancer: Melanoma, lung and breast cancer. In this review, we focus on summarizing the prognosis and impact of surgical resection of brain metastases originating from gastrointestinal cancers such as esophageal, gast...
متن کاملExtended resection in pancreatic metastases: feasibility, frequency, and long-term outcome: a retrospective analysis
BACKGROUND Metastases to the pancreas are rare, accounting for less then 2% of all pancreatic malignancies. However, both the benefit of extended tumor resection and the ideal oncological approach have not been established for such cases; therefore, we evaluated patients with metastasis to the pancreas who underwent pancreatic resection. METHODS Between 1994 and 2012, 676 patients underwent p...
متن کاملLong-Term Outcome of Patients Following Surgery for Metachronous Pulmonary Metastases of Highly Aggressive Non-Colorectal Cancers
Background: Most epithelial tumors metastasize to the lung. In 20% of cases no involvement of other organs can be detected. In patients with resectable colorectal lung metastases, the benefit of metastasectomy has been proven. No uniform guidelines exist, regarding entities such as hepatocellular carcinoma, pancreatic carcinoma or esophageal carcinoma. This study evaluated the long-term-outcome...
